Titus: A Comrade of the Cross

Titus: a Comrade of the Cross
By Florence M. Kingsley
Book Review by Amy B.

As I was browsing through the Lamplighter books on their website this one caught my eye.  I  read the description that said that in 1894 a publisher had a contest with a reward of $1,000 to anyone who could write a story that would set a child’s heart on fire for Christ and this little book was the result and winner of the prize.  I was captured and longed to read it.  I immediately put it at the top of our queue for the Lamplighter book club for it to be the next book received.
When it finally came I began to read it to my brothers and sisters every night that my parents would go out.  On more than one occasion I read until I could literally read no more and my throat was sore!  We were all enthralled with the historical depiction of Christ’s life on the earth from the perspective of the joyful people He had healed and the hypocritical high priests that sought His death- not to mention the mystery surrounding the disappearance of the son of the high priest!  We were ready to cry as we crawled next to the lame young Stephen as he struggled his way to find Jesus in hopes of His healing baby Gogo, and my heart went out to Titus as he mourned his sins of violence and thievery.
As I read aloud the drama pulled me in and I fell to gesticulating and using emphatic tones in my voice for so was the eloquence with which the book was written.  As I read the chapter of the crucifixion I felt as though I did neither the words on the page, nor the holy story justice, try as I might.  That same day I finished the book- after closing the beautifully bound red and golden cover I trembled.  I didn’t realize how much it had affected me until later- how real it had become.
This book is not only beautifully written but Biblically accurate.  There was not a word that came out of Jesus’ mouth within the story that was not spoken by Him 2,000 years ago.  The ending made me want to cry.  Even now as I write this emotion is coming back to me as I remember what Jesus said, “Verily I say unto thee, today shalt thou be with Me in paradise.”
Not only with this little book provide you with pure and true reading enjoyment, but it will aid you in your heart being set afire, passion and zeal for the Miracle Worker, the Great Physician, the Prince of Peace, and Lord of Lords.
